The Frozen River Trek

Not too many people can experience the wonder that is the Frozen River Trek. The mother of all treks, it can be exhilarating and challenging beyond belief. In Ladakh, this is also called the Chaddar Trek. 'Chaddar' literally means 'blanket', and metaphorically refers to the frozen blanket over Zanskar River. Heavily laced with adventure, the Chaddar trek is definitely breathtaking and it's a very good option for those who visit Ladakh during the winter when all the trek areas are cordoned off due to harsh weather. Frozen river treks are common amongst the village folk as Zanskar in winter can be isolated and the only way one can reach the rest of the world is by trekking the rivers. The trek requires you to walk a minimum of five to seven hours daily at a good pace and all you need is the capacity to stay fit enough to take on the extreme weather. With the coldest of temperatures to battle along with a picturesque scenario to boot, frozen river trekking in Ladakh is a dare. Temperatures are known to come down as much as 20-30 degrees celsius too.  Exquisite landscape, photographic valleys and arresting hills—river trekking in Ladakh makes sure you stay connected to your inner self.

For this particular expedition we uses all local staff from Zanskar, all the porters, and guide are from Zanskar itself, in every sense we want to give you a local feeling, and it helps the visitors to interact easily with local families, and monks. You will never forget the gathering and camp fire in evening, some places you have to sleep in caves ... a life time experience!

During this trek you might encounter with many rare species of wild life, for example Snow Leopards, (Panthera uncia), Wolf (Canis lupus), Fox (Vulpes vulpes) Siberian Ibex ( Capra Ibex cibirica) , Tibetan Argali (Ovis ammon), Bharal (Pseudis nayaur), Lynx (Felix lynx) and Brown Bear (Urso arctos) .

The two popular options for Chadar trek are:

Longer Option 18 to 20 days Route Leh - Chilling -Padum - Chilling

Shorter Option 12 to 14 days Route Leh - Chilling – Lingshed - Chilling
